Buddhist practitioners who have bad breath can chew gum before performing recitations.
Caller: The effect of performing recitations will be greatly diminished if people consume the five pungent spices. For those who have adopted a vegetarian diet but have bad breath, will the effect also be diminished?
Master Lu: Theoretically, it will still be diminished a little. However, for this, you will have to seek Bodhisattva's compassion. If you always think that you have bad breath, I suggest you recite scriptures in your mind. When your mouth smells or stinks, you should not recite too loudly. Don’t exhale through your mouth. Place your voice inside while breathing in and out. This method is equivalent to reciting scriptures with them flowing out from your brain and heart.
Caller: Master Lu, can we chew gum before performing recitations?
Master Lu: Of course. This is simple. When you offer incense, doesn’t the pleasant scent form a positive aura? Bodhisattva connects with this kind of aura. Why doesn't Bodhisattva go to places where it is very stinky? Because of the negative aura. Today, you keep reciting scriptures with bad breath—doesn’t that stink? So, there is nothing bad about chewing gum before recitation. When giving speeches, even I eat herbal candy due to my throat issue. I just can’t avoid that, otherwise my throat would be dry.
Caller: I understood. Thank you, Master Lu.
